“Altitude Sickness” of Diesel Generator Sets at High Altitudes and Effective Countermeasures

In high-altitude regions, diesel generator sets often experience a type of “altitude sickness” similar to humans, caused by thin air, low atmospheric pressure, and reduced oxygen content. These factors can result in reduced power output, difficult starting, increased fuel consumption, black smoke emissions, and other performance issues. Such problems not only affect the generator set’s operational efficiency but may also lead to equipment damage and higher operating costs. Below are the common issues encountered by diesel generator sets at high altitudes and the corresponding countermeasures:

1. Power Reduction

As altitude increases, air density and oxygen levels decrease, resulting in inadequate air intake and incomplete combustion, which ultimately reduces engine output power.
Countermeasures:

· Install exhaust turbochargers or electric superchargers to increase air intake and recover part of the power loss.

· Apply altitude-based power derating: typically, power decreases by 8%–10% for every 1,000 meters of elevation.

2. Starting Difficulties

High-altitude regions often experience large temperature fluctuations. During cold starts, the engine block, cooling system, and fuel system are at low temperatures, causing poor fuel atomization, increased oil viscosity, and higher starting resistance.
Countermeasures:

· Use low-temperature starting aids such as oil heaters, jacket-water heaters, and intake air heaters to ensure smooth starting in cold conditions.

· Adjust ECU starting fuel supply parameters to ensure proper air-fuel matching during ignition.

3. Increased Fuel Consumption

Incomplete combustion at high altitudes requires the engine to burn more fuel to maintain the same power output, resulting in increased fuel consumption.
Countermeasures:

· Optimize injection timing and injection pressure to improve combustion efficiency.

· Use turbocharging to increase air intake and ensure more complete fuel combustion.

4. Black Smoke Emissions

Insufficient air supply leads to incomplete combustion, causing unburned fuel to be expelled in the form of black smoke.
Countermeasures:

· Install turbochargers to improve air intake and combustion quality.

· Adjust fuel injection parameters to reduce unburned fuel.

5. Reduced Electrical Performance

At high altitudes, the lower air density reduces heat dissipation efficiency, resulting in higher generator temperature rise and degraded electrical performance.
Countermeasures:

· Use enlarged radiators and high-boiling-point coolant to maintain stable operating temperatures.

· Enhance insulation of electrical components to prevent faults caused by reduced air dielectric strength.

6. Reduced Mechanical Performance

The increased starting resistance and harsher operating conditions at high altitudes can lead to accelerated mechanical wear and degraded mechanical performance.
Countermeasures:

· Use lubricating oils suitable for low-temperature environments to reduce starting resistance.

· Perform regular inspections and maintenance to replace worn components in time.

Conclusion

Diesel generator sets indeed experience “altitude reaction” at high elevations, manifesting as power loss, difficult starting, increased fuel consumption, and other performance issues. By implementing turbocharging technology, optimizing combustion parameters, upgrading cooling systems, and adding low-temperature start-assist devices, these issues can be effectively mitigated. With proper configuration and maintenance, diesel generator sets can maintain stable and reliable operation even in challenging high-altitude environments.
